Dramatic flash flooding turns deadly in Kentucky
One person is dead and several others missing after flash flooding hit Johnson County, Kentucky Monday, reports CBS Lexington affiliate WKYT-TV.The county coroner says one person drowned. The Lexington Herald-Leader, a WKYT partner, says the man who died had gotten out of his vehicle and tried to walk through flood waters along a creek. It was unclear whether the man fell or was bumped by a floating car, but he drowned before onlookers pulled him from water.
Rescuers were still searching late Monday for 9 to 11 people reported missing after the flooding hit. Authorities said that included one or two children.
Johnson County Emergency Management officials say 40-50 homes were damaged or destroyed by the flooding, and many people had to be rescued from their homes when the water rose.
Authorities said at least 18 people were brought to hospitals, most with minor injuries.
