Police captain’s son plotted ISIS-inspired attack on college campus: FBI
The son of a Boston police captain was arrested by federal agents for plotting ISIS-inspired domestic terrorism, officials said Monday.Alexander Ciccolo, a 23-year-old from Adams, Mass., who also goes by the name Ali Al Amriki, became inspired by the Boston Marathon bombing and planned to attack a college campus, officials said Monday.
He was arrested receiving four guns from an informant on July 4, authorities said.
In his apartment, the FBI found possible bomb-making equipment including a pressure cooker, as was used by Boston Marathon bombers Dzhokar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, as well as a variety of chemicals, an alarm clock, along with “attack planning papers,” law enforcement sources said.
He’s the estranged son of Boston police Capt. Robert Ciccolo, who notified authorities about his concerns.
“He was afraid for what the son was about to do, and took it upon himself to notify the FBI,” a law enforcement official told the Boston Globe.
Authorities conceded that the younger Ciccolo has “a long history of mental illness.”
“Ciccolo said that he wanted to use pressure cookers to make a big explosion,” according to an FBI affidavit.
“He said that the Boston Marathon bombing gave him the idea of what to do, using the same materials and emptying fireworks into a pressure cooker.”
