The Juno star who publicly came out last year approached the Texas politician and asked about his thoughts on discrimination against gay people in the workplace.
“What about the question about LGBT people being fired for being gay-trans?” Page asked.
“Well, what we’re seeing right now, we’re seeing Bible-believing Christians being persecuted for living according to their faith,” Cruz responded.
While Cruz has shown a fondness for cooking bacon with a machine gun, the event in Iowa saw him grilling pork chops as he spoke to the public.
Ms Page, 28, persisted with her line of questioning only to have it turned back on her by Mr Cruz.
“You’re discriminating against LGBT people,” she said. “Well, would you use that argument in segregation?”
“Now I’m happy to answer your question, but not to have a back-and-forth debate,” said Cruz, a conservative Christian who has said he believes that marriage is between a man and a woman.
Somewhat strangely the senator goes on to condemn Middle Eastern governments for persecuting homosexuals and criticising the Obama administration for allowing it to happen. “Why does the Obama administration not stand against this?” he asked.
“I would love to talk to Obama about that, that’d be great,” she responded.
“Good well then we agree on that,” Cruz said as he brushed off the conversation.
“Don’t do that,” Page said
Speaking later to the ABC, Cruz categorised the conversation as one about “the persecution of religious faith.”
The Texas senator, 44, is running for the Republican nomination for the 2016 presidential race.
Both Page and Cruz grew up in Canada and it’s not the first time the actress has gone after him. She has previously posted messages to Twitter mocking the conservative politician
