Very often during the Test series between India and Sri Lanka at the latter’s backyard, the Sri Lankan seamers have appeared out of stamina and as a result have bowled in short spells. The conditions have been hot and humid, but the Indian seamers have coped better in the same conditions. Sri Lanka Cricket’s head of coaches has an explanation for the same. According to him, bowlers have not been used to long hours of bowling because of the batsmen who get out cheaply in the domestic First-Class circuit.
As reported by Indian Express, Jerome Jayaratne feels the bowlers break down often because they’re not exposed to long hours of bowling at a younger age owing to indifferent batting by teams in the domestic circuit where the average first innings score is a mere 256, while second innings average dips down to 142. “We don’t have a bowler here who is used to bowling or has ever bowled when the score is 150/2. Fast bowler needs to bowl 50 overs in a Test match, he bowls only 10-15 in a first-class match. “Then you have a Kaushal who is used to taking 5-6 wickets in every innings. So in Tests too, he doesn’t care who’s batting, he wants his 10 per match, and hence you see him bowl full-tosses and loose balls. He is literally learning his craft at the international level,” Jayaratne concludes.
