WATCH: Flash flooding shuts down Rt. 22 in Union, Somerset


Flash floods coinciding with the evening rush Wednesday were causing havoc on major roadways, according to authorities and witness accounts.

 Rt. 22 was closed between Scotch Plains and Mountainside due to roadway flooding as of about 6 p.m. Flooding was also reported along westbound I-78 in Berkeley Heights, causing delays of up to an hour, the state Department of Transportation reported.



The delays in Union spilled over in to Somerset County, where police in Watchung reported the highway gridlocked in both directions due to deep standing water.
 
A flash flood warning was in effect until 7:30 p.m. for parts of Somerset County, according to the New Jersey Weather Service.
