Eli Manning struggles, Ryan Nassib has strong showing vs. Jaguars | Giants QB grades
Starting quarterback Eli Manning had another unspectacular outing. But his understudy, Ryan Nassib, took advantage of some extended reps, throwing for over 200 yards and getting the Giants their first passing touchdown of the preseason.
Here's a look at how Manning, Nassib and, for four snaps at the end, third-string quarterback Ricky Stanzi did against the Jaguars (and no interceptions still):
GIANTS QB GRADES:
ELI MANNING: Obviously, no one is all that concerned with how Manning played. It is just the preseason, and he was only in for three series. But things are what they are, and Manning did not have a good night, despite getting adequate protection up front from his offensive line.
Manning and Odell Beckham Jr. could not get in sync, and Manning finished 4-of-14 passing for 46 yards. The Giants managed 76 yards on 24 plays with Manning under center, coming away with just a field goal to show for their efforts. It just was not a sharp effort for Manning, who had two passes tipped at the line, with a few more both overthrown and underthrown.
RYAN NASSIB: Nassib had a strong outing. The backup got some extended playing time, leading seven drives in total, and five of them resulted in the Giants scoring points. Granted, the bulk of the offense came on four field goals. But Nassib also gave the Giants their first passing score of the preseason, hitting Dwayne Harris for an 8-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Nassib went 19-of-35 passing with 217 yards and the touchdown throw finishing with a quarterback rating of 82.7, more than doubling Manning's 40.8.
Now, there were still times where Nassib perhaps held onto the ball too long - he was sacked right before halftime in such a situation - and others where he maybe bailed on the pocket too quickly. He made a few off-target throws and forced a few more. But all in all, a good night for the reserve where he was able to show what he can bring to an offense.
RICKY STANZI: Stanzi did not see the field until the Giants took over with 1:55 left in the game. All Stanzi did was hand the ball off twice to running back Kenneth Harper, then take a pair of knees in victory formation as the game came to a close. He did not attempt a pass.
THE GRADES:
Manning: C-.
Nassib: A.
Stanzi: Incomplete.
